Special Needs Action Committee (SNAC)

Comprised of: Head of Special Education Services (HOSES), Speech Pathologist, Support Teacher: Literacy and Numeracy (STLaN), Guidance Officer, Student Welfare and Engagement Teacher (SWET), Chaplain, Deputy Principals and Principal.

Diversity and inclusivity are fundamental to our practices at Ferny Grove State School.  We value difference and acknowledge that not all children progress in the same way.  SNAC is the forum where individual student concerns and needs are discussed.  We gather input from all stakeholders and collaboratively draw on the expertise of the group members to develop plans that best match the needs of our students.

Individual students are referred to SNAC through a consultative approach between the classroom teacher & parent in relation to concerns regarding their social, emotional, academic or behavioural progress.  SNAC meetings are held weekly to discuss and review progress of individual students.  Appropriate actions are agreed upon in order to best support the individual’s needs.

Actions are determined on a case-by-case basis and can include:

  • Further academic and/or social-emotional testing
  • Learning Support programs (such as MultiLit for phonemic awareness and reading support, and QuickSmart for numeracy support)
  • Special Education Unit support
  • Speech Language programs
  • 1:1 or small group support with Chaplain, SWET or Support Teachers
  • Outside agency referrals
  • Classroom adjustments
  • Individual behaviour and/or learning plans

Should you have particular concerns regarding your child, please speak to the classroom teacher to discuss referral to SNAC.
