Prep at Ferny Grove State School
The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) sets out the curriculum (what is taught) leaving teachers and schools to make decisions about the pedagogies (how it is taught). In 2015 and 2016, our school was highly involved in the Effective Age-Appropriate Pedagogies Project with Griffith University.
Effective Age-Appropriate Pedagogies in the early years are learner-centred, involve the scaffolding of learning, and engage children actively in learning. There is no set formula for the application of Age-appropriate pedagogies; however there are 11 characteristics and 7 approaches that guide teachers to create learning experiences that respond to individual child, context and purpose for learning. The teacher’s role in guiding and facilitating learning experiences is critical and needs careful consideration. It involves deliberate, purposeful and thoughtful decision making and actions on part of the teacher to promote children’s innate drive for independent learning. The teacher’s role changes as the balance between planned and spontaneous, and between adult-initiated and child-initiated learning experiences.
Through our research in this area, it is clear that children learn best in active, engaged, constructive and interactive environments, where the material they are learning is meaningful to them. Teaching in the early years needs to provide a range and balance of age-appropriate pedagogies to set children up for long-term success in the 21st century. At Ferny Grove State School prep is fun, exciting, busy and creative all while maintaining high expectations through meaningful learning experiences that nurture the love of learning.
